The Fallout Shelter is now fully operational

Underneath Lydon Library, the faint sound of live music can be heard in the distance,  wafting down the hallways, enticing your ears and filling your head with the best in underground, indie, hip-hop, punk/hardcore, metal, folk, and ethnic music. Now, on Monday nights from 8 p.m. until 11 p.m., you can hear live bands breaking in the newly renovated fallout shelter. “Live from the Fallout Shelter,” born in 1985, went on a one and a half year live-band hiatus. Now back in the groove of things there are major plans in the works.
Kicking it off with a bang, the Big Big Bucks of Allston, MA, blew the place apart. It felt like Christmas in the station as the guys from the Big Big Bucks set up in the Fallout Shelter. Once in a while one of the Bucks would come bouncing in and request a tune or two. Ian (keyboard/ guitar/ vocals) picks out good hardy dance jams such as “Enon” and “Apples in Stereo.”
The Big Big Bucks are Joe McHugh (Vocals, Bass); Mike Tucker (Drums); Chris Basso (Guitar); and Ian Gustafson (Keyboard, Vocals, Guitar). Their newest album, The Rabbit Rabbit E.P. can’t even be described by this humble writer. The songs are complicatedly simple, beautiful and some what dancey. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t jealous of Joe’s vocal vocabulary. Screamy at times but always clear, the music will inspire you to start a band and maybe even shell out the $200 for that keytar you’ve been eyeing on eBay.
“Call us up. Hang out. Play Nintendo. Come over and watch degrassi.” suggested Joe halfway through the set. Minutes later, phones were ringing and girls were screaming. The band-mates have this weird mystique that makes you want to hug them. Need a website? Easy. www.thebigbigbucks.com. Listen to a few tunes and get ready to be awed by local music.
More bands are joining the ranks of the Big Big Bucks such as Caspian (Feb. 18), Hollywood Lies (Feb. 18) and Beneath the Sheets (March. 3).
