Straying away from the norm of summer sports

From the end of hockey and basketball to the beginning of baseball and other obscurities, the summer months normally bring an abundance of activities for the average sports enthusiast.

For those in the area who want to experience quality baseball for a much lower hassle and price tag than a Red Sox game, they can check out the Lowell Spinners at LeLacheur Park. Tickets range from $5 for standing room to $10 for premium box seats, and are on sale now through the box office or on line. Try not to let the Single A minor league baseball tag fool you though, as tickets can and will sell out.

There are some people who have a difficult time getting over the fact that, during summer, hockey comes to a close. For those people, however, they can try a not so much new sport that over the last few years has been rising in popularity.

Also known as octopush, underwater hockey takes everything a hockey fan loves and puts it in a pool, as players arm themselves with masks, snorkels, and fins while using small sticks to push around a lead hockey puck. For a visual, imagine a small army of scuba divers hitting each other with sticks while swimming after a hockey puck.

Cyclist aficionados will be happy to hear about the neighborhood’s newest two wheeled sensation; Urban Bike Polo. In this relatively new sport, players wield plastic poles and ride around a concrete court or a well kept lawn chasing after a ball in full-contact, intense polo style, while ridding themselves of wimpy old horses in favor of freshly oiled bicycles. Picture Lance Armstrong tearing through serene and peaceful grasslands with little bunnies and squirrels frolicking around while wielding a large mallet hell-bent on destroying everything in his path, and you have Bike Polo.

Students at UMass Lowell (UML) are certainly not at a loss for ideas, as to them, the possibilities are endless.

“This summer I’m finally going to start training for the Winter Olympics,” said freshman Owen Gudinas. “I’ll be trying to get on the Colbert Speed Skating team. And one day, I inspire to be as good as Shawnee Davis.”

“I’ll be playing in a bocce ball tournament,” said freshman Andrew Bullock. “I’m picking out my balls next week.”

Those already on UML sports teams never get a break, though, as their duties continue when both the season and school year end.

“I’m playing in seven softball tournaments and coaching a 144 softball team, and I’ll be here at UMass Lowell during the week for softball workouts,” said freshman softball player Katie Mazure. “I basically do the whole softball thing every day year-round, and I enjoy doing it.”

All in all, no matter how a sports fan spends their summer, be it methodical and normal or just flat out weird, the summertime always proves to be enjoyable.
