Selecting A-List Picks
Warm weather, the beach, the lakes, and the end of the school year is the reason why most students love April.
Others are head over heels awaiting a new baseball season, and what America’s favorite pastime can bring.
Will the Evil Empire re-peat? Can Joe Mauer put up another monster season and give Albert Pujols a run for his money as the best overall hitter in baseball? Or even better, who should you be drafting in your fantasy league?
As far as a No. 1 pick there are three obvious choices to make, Pujols, Hanley Ramirez, and Alex Rodriguez.
One of the most debated questions in baseball for the last eight seasons is who is the best player in baseball?
The debate involves two players, A-Rod and Pujols. Picking either player will be the right answer.
Pujols won his third MVP last season while posting a .327 batting average, an impressive .443 on-base percentage, slugging over 300 points higher then his batting average at .658, hitting 47 home runs, batting 135 runs in, and scoring 124 runs.
I will predict he will win his fourth MVP this year and post numbers such as .340 batting average, 45 home runs, 130 runs batted in, 115 runs scored, 105 walks, and will slug over .680.
We have seen A-Rod put up ridiculous numbers in the past, especially in 2007, but I have a feeling that this season he might duplicate the 2007 season.
I believe this for many reasons but the main reason is because he finally has a ring and that can only mean one thing; there will be no pressure on A-Rod this year so expect him to relax and enjoy playing in New York for the first time since getting traded in 2004.
The hip is not a concern at all as he did not require the serious surgery that many thought A-Rod was to have during the off-season and with Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson, and Mark Texeira hitting in front of him, things can only get better for A-Rod.
If A-Rod picks up where he left off, batting .365 with six home runs and 18 runs batted in during the 2009 post-season, Rodriguez might collect his fourth MVP of his career.
My predictions for A-Rod this year look like this: .305 batting average, 42 home runs, 128 runs batted in, 115 runs scored, 25 stolen bases, and a .590 slugging average.
Ramirez is without a doubt one of the most exciting players in baseball to watch, and a future multiple MVP winner.
Ramirez had an all-star season in 2009 when he batted .342, hit 24 home runs, batted in 106 runs, stole 27 bases, scored 101 runs, and slug .543.
Ramirez should have hit over 30 long balls, batted over 110 runs, stole at least 35 bases, and scored a minimum of 115 runs.
Playing for the Florida Marlins might have caused him those numbers since the team is not that deep and talented, but he has the skills to create opportunities for himself.
Ramirez is the one true five-tool player in the league today; he is a rare combination that can win a ball game with his bat, speed, and defense.
El Niño should post a batting average of .335, hit 34 home runs, bat in 115 runs, score 120 runs, and steal 40 bases.
A-Rod, Pujols, and Ramirez should be the top three picks in any league, not in that particular order but if you have a top three pick, those are the gentlemen you must pick.
There are notable players like Mauer, Ryan Braun, Matt Kemp, and Miguel Cabrera but I do not believe they can collect more fantasy points than those three.
