Support The Advocates

In Fox Common earlier this month, The Advocates showed the crowd an intensely fun time with their upbeat songs and personalities. Whether the audience was singing along or simply feeling the vibe of the music, everybody was alive and loving the performance.

“It’s an awesome feeling when you play shows and people are into what you’ve created,” the band says.

With guitarist and lead vocalist Andy Torossian, drummer Casey Smith, back-up vocalist and bassist Matt Milisci, and Sean Harrington on the synth, The Advocates are UMass Lowell’s very own one-of-a-kind musical bombshell.

The band originally formed about six years ago when Andy was in high school. Since then, different people came and went, but thankfully these four have stuck together and remained a steady band for over a year now.

The Advocates, who are excitedly planning on recording a full-length album in May, say that their music has evolved drastically since they have begun playing together.

“When we first started playing, we were a ska/rock mix. We sounded very ska in our verses and then built up into heavier rock choruses. Over last year’s summer vacation, we decided that even though we really enjoyed the music, it wasn’t the style we were passionate about. We started writing new stuff and now we have found the sound we are looking for. It’s rock with maybe a slight hint of punk. We love it,” the band says.

Their new and improved sound seems to be at the absolute top of the musical totem pole with catchy lyrics and even catchier melodies. The Advocates have grown into an unmatched band that present themselves eminently well.

Though Harrington’s main instrument is the drums, he began playing keys at age 16 and now plays on a Korg synthesizer and an M-Audio keyboard. It is impressive how well he plays, and the synth compliments the rest of the music and gives it a beautiful twist.

“So Obvious” is the most captivating and best-performed song by the band. Torossian’s voice sings “Just talk when no one’s listening/ Don’t act so condescending” and it blends together with the rest of the band’s hard work on their instruments, making the song an automatic favorite.

“Basically when we write songs, Andy has an idea for a guitar part and a vocal melody and then when we practice, he brings the idea with him and we all build off of that,” said the band.

Motion City Soundtrack, Yellowcard, and Less Than Jake are some big influences on the band’s music, and their favorite local band to play with is Spies Like Us because “they have been very supportive of us and they are just a lot of fun to play shows with.”

The outgoing band describes their music as “fun, thoughtful (as in we put a lot of thought into the music), and energizing.” Each song, whether you are listening to it on your headphones or you are at one of their shows, energizes you and you have fun. Listeners can tell each song has been intricately designed and that a lot of thought was put into the music.

With their effort, dedication, positive attitudes, and friendly personalities, The Advocates are an all-around inspiring, outstanding band. “We are looking to keep taking our music more seriously. We are trying to get our name out there not only locally, but outside of the area. This is a process, but we are working hard and that is our goal.”
