Silence is Golden in Classrooms

I have been a student at Umass Lowell since the fall of 2006, lots has changed. More students go here, there are more places to park, and the university bought a hotel. However one thing that has remained constant every year is the group of idiots sitting in the back of class chatting through a lecture. College is expensive and difficult; I don’t have time to be missing a lecture because all I can hear is some guy talk about how many beers he drank last night. Each class here at UML costs roughly a $1000 dollars. If you talk in class you (or more likely your parents) are wasting a lot of money and a lot of peoples time.

Imagine what a Professor thinks of you. That person spent a minimum of 6 years in school maybe more to be able to share their knowledge with you. When you talk over what they are saying you are not showing them the respect they deserve. Speaking of respect, how can you be in your late teens and early twenties and be taken seriously as an adult when you can’t sit down and shut up for a few hours a week.

Luckily it seems that as classes get harder this issue becomes less prevalent. Maybe this is Darwin’s way of righting the issue or maybe most of the talkers are all in a major that I am not. Either way it is ridiculous that anyone could be in college and not be able to hear a teacher over a group of kids gabbing. Try to be adults, if not for yourselves than for your classmates. Some of us are here to try to learn and become better people through education. Your conversations are unnecessary, unwanted, and quite frankly usually unintelligent.

Your behavior is embarrassing and it needs to stop, now.
