Bentley leaves UML bats silent

Thursday night at LeLacheur Park proved to be a tough one for UMass Lowell (UML) baseball, as Bentley went on to win in a 5-0 contest. Junior Falcon pitcher Brett Domato pitched a complete game shutout against the ’Hawks, limiting them to just four hits.

This loss puts UML at a 12-8 record on the season, and 1-3 in the Northeast 10 Conference, while Bentley rose to 9-12 and 4-2 in the NE-10.

It was a rough second inning for UML’s starting pitcher junior Ted Haley, as a two run homer put Bentley ahead 2-0.

Haley would go on to pitch three full innings, allowing three runs and seven hits in his performance.

Bentley capitalized on a UML fielding blunder in the bottom half of the fourth, leaving runners on first and third with one out. Immediately after a quick pitching change to sophomore Dallas Nunes, the Falcons drove in one more run to make the score 3-0. A double play ended the inning without further harm.

Nunes went on to pitch until the ninth, going a total of five innings. He allowed two runs and five hits.

Bentley’s bats came alive again in the top of the seventh, as a solo home run over the left field wall increased their lead to four. At this point, they also outhit the ’Hawks 10-0.

Senior Jared Notargiacomo would get the ’Hawks going in the seventh when he laced a double to right field, resulting in UML’s first hit of the evening.

A single by senior Peter Onorato sent Notargiacomo to third, but he was thrown out at the plate later on while trying to tag on a fly ball. This ended the inning, and was also the closest UML came to scoring a run. Notargiacomo would go on to have another hit in the ninth, coupling him with two hits total.

The Falcons tacked on an insurance run in the first half of the eighth, after a lead- off double started the inning. A call by the umpire, ruling a play by the center fielder as an error and not a catch, put runners in scoring position, and a base hit drove in one.

Sophomore pitcher Ryan Stoller came in to close the ninth to prevent any further damage, and pitched a perfect inning.
