River Hawks rack up frequent flyer miles

Not even a change in time zones could end the momentum of the fifth ranked River Hawks. UMass Lowell swept the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers over the weekend, winning both games 1,137 miles away from home in Huntsville, Alabama.

The ‘Hawks started off the weekend with a 3-1win Friday night thanks to the help of a two goal game from Colin Wright. They followed that win up with a 4-0 win Saturday off of the second shutout of the season for Carter Hutton.

The weekend sweep concludes a stretch of long road games that the ‘Hawks had in the first month of the season.

In their six games away from home this season, the ‘Hawks traveled 2,871 miles to get to those games. In those six games the ‘Hawks went 4-1-1.

Along with the 1,137 miles traveled to Huntsville this weekend, 1,437 of those miles were to the Icebreaker tournament in Omaha, Nebraska, 197 miles to Vermont, and 30 to Boston University. The team has averaged 466.8 miles traveled per road game, 554.2 if the mere 30 miles traveled to Boston University is removed.

That would be enough miles to be able to travel to places like Las Vegas, Calgary, Edmonton, or to Miami and back. This would be enough miles to go to Ford Field, where the Frozen Four is held this year, and back twice, and still have extra miles to get lost.

The ‘Hawks have had two different weekend series require more then 1,000 miles of travel to get to in the course of 35 days.

The ‘Hawks will not have to worry about jet lag anymore this season. The plane rides are over, and the bus trips are shortened for the rest of the season. After their weekend at Huntsville, AL the furthest the ‘Hawks have to travel is for their weekend series at the University of Maine, which is 204 miles away. The team has five of their seven remaining games in 2009 at home as well.

Even their holiday tournament, which has been held in places such as Illinois and Florida the previous two years, will only be 107 miles away in Hanover, NH. This gives fans a better chance to support their team during their winter break tournament.

The only time the ‘Hawks would have to make an extended road trip would be if they were placed in Fort Wayne, Indiana or St. Paul, Minnesota during the 2010 NCAA Hockey tournament.

The week up ahead do not have the ‘Hawks traveling far, but do have the team playing a strange schedule. After the upcoming game this Saturday at the Tsongas against Merrimack, the ‘Hawks only have two days to get ready for their Tuesday evening match up at Providence College. They then have to prepare during Thanksgiving break as they take on the Maine Black Bears on Black Friday at the Tsongas Arena.
