‘Up” Dvd Review
“Up”, the tenth release and consecutive hit for Pixar Animation, is a spectacle to behold, whether it be the stunning animation or the emotionally enriched storyline. With 10 Best Picture nominees at this year’s Academy Awards, “Up” seems set to become the second animated film ever to receive the honor, along with “Beauty and the Beast”.
Elderly Carl Fredricksen sets his house afloat with myriad balloons only to find a young castaway on his porch; the garrulous Wilderness Explorer named Russell. Along the rip-roaring adventure the two characters encounter a talking dog named Dug and a colorful bird named Kevin, set to a sublime score and against a backdrop of beautiful colors and scenery.
Speaking to children and adults on equal yet separate levels, the film’s complicated storyline of emotional authenticity is a sheer wonder, and the DVDs impressive commentary by director Pete Docter and co-director Bob Peterson shows truly how personal a film “Up” actually is.
From the signature touches to the touching reflections on life, hearing the two filmmakers discuss what they consider, and is duly deserved to be deemed, a pure artistic vision is certainly worth the listen.
Additional extras include “Partly Cloudy”, the short that preceded the film in theaters, a few alternate scenes, and a featurette on adventure, but the true highlight is “Dug’s Special Mission”.
This hilarious short following the antics of the beloved talking dog Dug before meeting up with Carl and Russell had me exclaiming, “SQUIRREL!” with bursting-at-the-seams enjoyment. Pixar has done it again.
Will I ever get tired of saying that?
