‘Call of Duty 2: Modern Warfare’ Review

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 dropped this past Tuesday in what has been called the biggest release of the year. The much anticipated sequel to 2007’s COD4 has been breaking records for pre-orders and sales. It is not hard to understand why either.

The game has something to offer for fans of the FPS genre both new and old. An impressively cinematic story mode, a rich multi-player, and even 2 player co-op challenges.

The story of the game is simple. It picks up five years after COD4 and the game asks the player to be pretty familiar with what happened in the previous game, so one might want to brush up on that before jumping into the MW2 story mode.

Whereas the Call of Duty series is known for playing around in WWII, the Modern Warfare games take things to the near future. That means they deal with some familiar themes. Namely, terrorism, nuclear weapons, and conflict in the middle east.

The story revolves around a war between the US and Russia that involved an invasion of our country. Taking a page from Red Dawn, one of several parallel story lines that the player engages in has you filling the combat boots of a US Army Ranger and fighting off a full scale invasion of the US.

These missions alternate with the more black ops, special forces missions of a multinational task force devoted to dealing with the shadow politics and dirty jobs behind the scenes of the war.

Together, these blend into a fast paced, relatively short story mode that nonetheless draws in the player and keeps them riveted with plot twists, familiar fears, and all around action.

One particular part of the storyline has brought up quite a bit of controversy, as it has the player committing atrocities while undercover with a terrorist group. The portion in question is meant to evoke emotion in the player but has been considered by many to be disturbing and inappropriate.

You will have to play to find out what exactly your character participates in but know that the game gives you the option to skip this entire portion should you find it unbearable.

In terms of gameplay, the story line offers few differences from its predecessor aside from a couple new toys and some vehicle sequences. But this is not a huge problem as many consider the multiplayer to be the real reason to get the game.

With a number of selectable classes, perks, and a system of unlocking equipment and game modes, the multiplayer of MW2 has a lot to offer. The player can customize the sort of equipment and abilities they use in order to compliment their preferred style of play.

Should they do well, they will unlock even more options, making it a very flexible system. Add in special abilities for scoring multiple kills in a row, and the multiplayer is just as enthralling and adrenaline filled as the single player.

The game is beautiful, the musical score captivating, and the play itself is top notch. The game is a must get for fans of the FPS genre and is sure to be considered a classic in years to come.
