ICC YOU! Jeepers creeper
Seeing John “Bluto” Blutarsky climbing a ladder and peeking into an unsuspecting co-ed’s rooms may have been entertaining in “National Lampoon’s Animal House,” but these antics are not college humor, but serious crimes at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
On Saturday Nov. 7, a man was spotted on the third level of the Lower Locks Garage located next to the UMass Lowell Inn and Conference Center. Not unlike John Belushi’s character, he was allegedly staring into the windows of the ICC using binoculars.
At around 9 p.m., police responded to a call about the suspicious activity outside the ICC. While no one was found at the scene, the individual was described as a white male with a shaved head, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and jeans.
The police received another call at around 11:30 p.m. Again, no one was found fitting the given description.
The incident is “currently under investigation by detectives in the Lowell Police Department,” said Captain Randall Humphrey, LPD’s Public Information Officer.
The LPD is heading the investigation, because the suspect was not on university property. However, both police departments are working together to find the suspect and keep students safe.
Because of the occurrence, “patrols have been increased in the area, in conjunction with UML Police Department.”
“It’s pretty creepy,” said mechanical engineering major, Laura Mayhan. “One of the RAs told me about what happened.”
When questions about their reaction to what happened on Saturday night, many students stated that they were being informed for the very first time of the event that took place.
Psychology major Nicole Rosa said that now that she is aware that this occurrence happened she would be sure to keep her blinds closed.
“It’s an inconvenience because now I can’t open the shades and enjoy the sunlight.”
Civil engineering major, Joe Ripley was shocked that some one would even think to invade student’s privacy, “most of college isn’t like what you see on the movies. It is unbelievable that someone would even think to do such a thing.”
The Lowell Police Department urges anyone who has any information, to contact the Lowell Police Department’s Investigations Unit at 978-937-3242, the police number at 978-937-3200 or the anonymous tip hotline at 978-459-TIPS.
