UML Reducing its carbon footprint

On Thursday October 22, the UML Climate Action Coalition will have a UML Climate Change Teach-In on campus. The coalition is composed of numerous student groups and faculty who are all anxious about the future of our planet. The Teach-In is only one of many, which will take place across not only Massachusetts, but across the nation as a whole.

This issue is crucial and will not only affect, but produce a future for the planet, which will entail sludge filled streams and smog filled skies.  A number of scientific studies all yield the same results and show us the same disgraceful facts. We have through the years caused numerous and immense injuries to the planet’s climate. Luckily, these changes have been noticed and have sparked an international alliance to reduce the carbon footprint of humanity on the planet.

Scientists, educators, and citizens believe it is near impossible to erase the damage we have caused, but imperative to prevent further harm and so they ask that the students, faculty, and staff attend the Teach-In and discover ways in which they can help the planet. The event is a tremendous opportunity for the UML family to become a part of the international family attempting to truly change the future of our home, Earth.

The Teach-In will begin on North Campus in the Cumnock Hall Auditorium from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. The event will begin with Dr. Juliette Rooney-Varga and Dr. Matthew Barlow updating us all in regards to what the latest scientific research is telling us about our changing planet. Following this will be three more speakers.

The first, Dr. Mark Hines, will deliver a presentation called, “The Arctic: The Face of Early Change.” Following will be Dr. Supriya Lahiri, who will speak on “The Economics of Climate Change.” Finally, Shayle Kann, a Senior Analyst at Green Tech Media, will present “Carbon Markets and Offsetting.” For those of you who need a bit more motivation, pizza and refreshments will be served.

The day will later be continued on the South Campus Quad from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm, if there is rain it will take place in McGauvran second floor. At the event there will be live music from a UML student band, “J.B.C.” The Mayor of the City of Lowell, Edward “Bud” Caufield will be in attendance and there will be three speakers. The afternoon will begin with Dr. David Turcotte, Chair of the Lowell Green Building Commission, on “Local Efforts to Mitigate the Impacts of Buildings on Global Warming.” Next, Dr. Joel Tickner will speak in regards to “Climate Change and Your Health.” The last speaker of the day will be Scott Clavenna, CEO and President of GreenTech Media, on “The Future of Green Tech Jobs.”

The UML Climate Action Coalition requests the attendance of students, faculty, and staff. Without people being willing to learn and alter the way they live, the battle to save the planet will be lost. The Earth needs assistance from every single one of its inhabitants and each one can make a difference. Go “green” so that the sky and oceans don’t go black.
