Even Ace Ventura could not save these Dolphins
A person can do just about anything in 1,032 minutes, except score a goal against the UMass Lowell Women’s Soccer team. Our president proved he could win a Nobel Peace Prize, and call a musician a jackass all before the River Hawks allow a goal.
The River Hawks shutout Le Moyne Dolphins 1-0 Saturday afternoon at Cushing Field to record their record setting tenth consecutive game without allowing a goal. The ‘Hawks have gone 11 straight games without a loss, another school record.
The win improves the ‘Hawks record to 10-2-2 overall and a conference record of 9-1-1.
“Not the best game that we played, but it is important we continue to grind out these results,” said Head Coach Elie Monteiro, “We were able to get a goal, and we are progressing.”
The lone goal of the game was scored by freshman forward Taylor Hartmann in the seventeenth minute of the game off of a deflection from the Le Moyne goalkeeper. That goal gave Hartmann No. 7 of the season, which leads the team. Junior Brianne Bozzella was credited with the assist.
Senior Jamie Gillis was able to record seven saves while securing the shutout. The shutout for Gillis along with the streak was being threatened late in the game when Le Moyne found themselves with several scoring opportunities.
Gillis was able to deflect two quick shots from Le Moyne, and a third shot went wide leaving the dolphins scoreless after their best opportunity. It was a close situation Coach Monteiro did not want to see.
“We need to prevent some of those shots from happening,” said Monteiro. “It is something that you never want to see in the eighty-fifth minute of a 1-0 game.”
Regardless the shutout was kept intact, and it broke a school record for the ‘Hawks. The last goal that UML gave up was back on Sept. 9 against Stonehill College in the thirteenth minute. They have outscored their opponents 22-5 this season.
Along with a record setting shutout streak the ‘Hawks also broke the school record for consecutive games without a loss. The last game that the ‘Hawks lost was Sept. 6 against Florida Southern. Since then UML has gone 9-0-2 in the past 11 games.
The streak is something Coach Monteiro did not want to talk about for fear of jinxing it. He will let the team and defense do the talking.
The ‘Hawks next play at St. Michaels Wednesday Oct. 14. Their next home game is Saturday Oct. 17 at 2:00 p.m. at Cushing Field.
