Fun October frights in the autumn lights in Salem

It is finally October. For those who love caramel apples, colorful leaves, and Halloween, we can rejoice. The long wait is over, the city of Salem is ready to help us celebrate.

October 1 was the kick off of Salem Haunted Happenings, which is a month long Halloween festival. This year marks the festival’s tenth anniversary. The theme of the opening night parade was “Night at the Museum”, and it was filled with local schools and businesses. Locals and other Massachusetts residents attended this event, but as the month progresses, people from around the world will come to Salem to see the city with a witchy past.

Anyone who went to grade school in New England knows the story of the Salem Witch Trials, and the city has capitalized on their dark history. In the past decade, Salem has become both a tourist attraction and a spiritual Mecca for countless people.

Many of the attractions are educational in some facet, and are some of the most popular draws into the city. The Salem Witch Museum is the city’s most visited museum. During the month of October, there are lines of people that stretch out the door and down the road just waiting to get in.

The museum tells the history of what happened in Salem Village during the year of 1692, and also touches upon the perception of witches through time.

There are also other museums that cover the history of Salem, and some that seek to educate the public on what witchcraft truly is. The Witch Dungeon Museum, Witch History Museum, and the New England Pirate Museum have a combination ticket available that will save you a few dollars. Some of the haunted houses on Pickering Warf also have a combination ticket.

No reservations are necessary for these activities, but if you want to go on one of the many walking tours or trolley tours, it is advisable to purchase your tickets ahead of time because these events are quite popular. The ghost tours fall into the category of popular tours.

There are about half a dozen different companies that lead nightly tours, either on foot or by trolley, and the quality of the tour usually depends on your guide. There are some very hokey tours out there. If you are lucky, your guide will be an adept storyteller or actor. If you do not want to leave it up to fate and want to be guaranteed an awesome story, then I suggest heading over to the Witch House.

During the Eerie Evenings event, costumed actors tell ghost stories. Cry Innocent and the Salem Pioneer Village are two other attractions that work together, and they always put on a great show.

Halloween night in Salem is a wild event and it is not kid friendly by any means. If you are coming with small children, I would suggest another day to visit. The entirety of downtown historical Salem becomes a block party.

A huge portion of Derby Street is closed down, as well as many other smaller roads that have high pedestrian traffic. The Hawthorne Hotel’s costume ball will take place from 8 p.m. until midnight. This year’s theme is “Reality BITES.” Tickets are ninety dollars, and you must be twenty-one to enter.

The Official Salem Witches Ball will be held the day before, but the Salem Witches’ Magic Circle will take place on the Salem Common, which is an event open to the public.

So, put on your costumes everyone, and get yourself to Salem for a magical time. If you are coming for the shopping, the tours, the museums, or just the atmosphere, I guarantee that you will have a fabulous time. All the events mentioned and more can be found at www.hauntedhappenings.com.
