Find the best seat in Hockey East
With the UMass Lowell hockey season coming fast, all students are encouraged to attend not only home, but on the road games. For those who have never been to a game at another college hockey arena and do not know what to expect, fear not. Here is a review of arenas used by other Hockey East teams.
The reviews break down into five main categories: Parking, accessibility, concessions, seating, pricing, and maybe a few random facts. Keep in mind this does not reflect any teams, just where they play.
Agganis Arena (BU)
Opened in 2005 it did not take Agganis long to become the most impressive arena. The arena seats 6,300 fans and there is not a seat with a bad view. Like the Tsongas it is opened in the back to give the fans roaming the concourse area the ability to see the game. Agganis is the only arena aside from the Tsongas who can serve beer too. Unlike the Tsongas, Agganis has four video scoreboards hung above center ice. Parking is tough with is being on Commonwealth Avenue, but there is an MBTA station right by. Concession pricing runs about par with others, but tickets are one of the more expensive at $24-$26.
Conte Forum (BC)
Although Conte Forum may be over 20 years old it still has a lot to offer for hockey fans. The arena can be reached easily from the Pike or Commonwealth Avenue, and has a good amount of parking for those driving. Tickets are a fair price as Boston College has games that start at $10 (including against UML in February). The arena seats 7,884 fans, and contains luxury boxes that have views of both Conte Forum and Alumni Field, the football stadium. The only problem is most of the seats have padding, but no back to them. Conte Forum has many concession stands outside that can be accessed but the game cannot be seen unless people are near the ends of the ice. The forum provides a trophy case at one end of the ice giving fans a chance to see the success of their athletic programs.
Mullins Center (UMass)
Opened in 1993, the Mullins Center is one of the more confusing arenas for hockey fans. Getting to the arena is difficult enough as there is no easy way to get to Amherst. Although it seats 8,387, the design is weird, and can be an obstacle course to find seats. The concourse area is blocked off by theatre like doors so fans are unable to see the game when out there. Food is average price, but does offer unique features such as Nathan’s Hot Dogs and Dominos Pizza. Tickets for the game are reasonable priced at $12.
Matthews Arena (Northeastern)
The Matthews Arena will be a new concept for all fans as the arena underwent large amounts of renovation. This will not be the same arena it was when opened in 1910. New seats were installed along with a Jumbotron at center ice. Parking and accessibility will be the same, which is difficult. Even with the E line on the MBTA Green Line, it is still a tough place to get to. Ticket prices are in the middle as there are seats available anywhere from $14-$18.
Wherever they go, whatever arena they play at, and whatever price it costs for a hot dog fans this season are encouraged to go see the River Hawks not just at home, but elsewhere in the conference.
