“Hip Hop Live” at the UML Rec Center

This past Wednesday night, the Campus Activities Association (CAPA) hosted SONY’s® Hip-Hop Live tour. The tour brought hip-hop legends Talib Kweli and David Banner as well as the relative new comer B.o.B. In addition to these artists the 10-Piece live band Rhythm Roots All Stars was on stage backing the artists. Most notable of the Rhythm Roots All Stars was drummer/percussionist Alan Lightner, who not only played the drums but grabbed the mic during the set.

Hanson walks to inspire others

Isaac, Taylor, and Zac Hanson sat on their tour bus last Wednesday afternoon in Hartford, Conn., with hundreds of barefoot girls surrounding it, just waiting for the brothers to emerge.

Rocked and Shocked with Children of Bodom

Not even the ghoulish guests, scary sights or dreary decorations in downtown Worcester could steal attention away from first-night finale of the Rock and Shock Tour, Children of Bodom. The hellish headliners ended night one of the three-day festival with such impressive force, it left fans literally screaming for more.

Scattered events at poetry festival

The cultural council of Lowell spearheaded efforts to create and execute the first annual Massachusetts Poetry Festival in Lowell over Columbus Day Weekend. With 42 events happening over three days, the cobblestone streets, back alleys, and byways of Downtown Lowell were traversed by many first-time visitors, as well as locals and any walks of poetry-loving people.

One professor’s take on the financial crisis

UMass Lowell Professor William Lazonick has taken an in-depth look at the economy and the reasons why it is in a weak state. He has written a book on the subject, Sustainable Prosperity in the New Economy? Business Organization and High Tech Employment in the US, which will be published sometime in 2009. According to him, a lack of job security, a disappearing middle class, and companies buying back their stocks are the key factors in the weakened economy.

’Hawks tie with Assumption on Senior Night

Last Tuesday the River Hawks women’s soccer team honored their three seniors playing in the final home game of their careers. Midfielder Margaret Gonsalves, forward Natalia Mendoza, and midfielder Captain Grace Larsen were recognized for their achievements on the field before Tuesday’s 1-1 tie with the Assumption College Greyhounds. Over 300 fans were in attendance.

Visiting professor connects Lord of the Rings to Beowulf

Last Wednesday, UML students were given a unique insight into Middle Earth.

Dr. Michael Drout, professor and chair of the English department at Wheaton College, gave a lecture in O’Leary Library entitled “J.R.R. Tolkien, Beowulf, and the Lord of the Rings” describing the significance of philology (the study of the history of languages) to Tolkien’s beloved fantasy novels and to life in general.

Car accident on Broadway and Solomont

Two cars collided at the intersection of Broadway and Solomont Way last Thursday at about 6 p.m., said Police Chief Alan Roscoe. No one was hurt.
